From Layoff to Purpose: How the Cannabis Science and Operations Program Changed My Life

February 13, 2025  Written by Jeff Rowse

A Story from Jeff Rowse

Life has a funny way of rerouting us when we least expect it. For me, that pivotal moment came during the COVID-19 pandemic when I was laid off. What could have been a time of despair turned out to be an opportunity for transformation, thanks to the Cannabis Science and Operations Certificate program at Saint Louis University (SLU).

From a Family Business to a Fresh Start

Before the pandemic, I worked for a small, family-run engraving company. It was honest, steady work, but I often found myself wondering if there was something more for me out there. Then came COVID-19, and like so many others, I was laid off.

I first learned about the Cannabis Science and Operations program on the local news. The idea of stepping into the cannabis industry sparked something in me. I used stimulus money to pay for the first class in the program, thinking it might be worth exploring. What I didn’t realize at the time was that I had just taken the first step on a journey that would change my life.

From Curiosity to Commitment

The first class opened my eyes to the possibilities within the cannabis industry, and I knew I had found my calling. But my connection to cannabis didn’t start there. Ever since California passed Proposition 215—the groundbreaking legislation legalizing medical marijuana in 1996—I had been a passionate advocate for the plant. That moment of change sparked a deep interest that led to years of local activism and a lifelong self-education about cannabis and its potential.

Enrolling in SLU’s program wasn’t a random decision—it was the next logical step in a journey I’d been on for decades. To continue the program after that first class, I took out a student loan for the first time in 30 years—a leap of faith in myself and my future.

Because I was unemployed and the program was entirely online, I treated my studies like a full-time job, dedicating more than eight hours a day to my coursework. Those who know me best said they had never seen this level of tenacity from me before. But I knew this wasn’t just about finding a new career; it was about redefining my purpose.

From Student to Professional

The program was a deep dive into everything cannabis. I gained hands-on knowledge in cultivation, compliance, extraction, and the science behind the plant’s effects. But what made it truly transformative were the instructors—industry experts who lived and breathed cannabis.

One of those experts, my teacher and later my advisory mentor, didn’t just teach me the basics. He saw my potential and offered me a job before I had even completed the program’s capstone project. That opportunity marked the beginning of my professional journey in the cannabis industry.

From a Layoff to a Life’s Work

Looking back, the Cannabis Science and Operations program wasn’t just a new chapter—it was a turning point. It took a difficult time in my life and turned it into something I’m deeply passionate about.

Since joining Feel State, I’ve been given opportunities I never could have imagined. I’ve created 53 podcast episodes and counting, each one aimed at educating and engaging our audience about cannabis. I’ve been entrusted with coordinating pop-ups and events that bring the community together, helping to demystify cannabis and foster meaningful conversations. Additionally, I oversee the creation of social media assets that not only promote the Feel State brand but also inspire and inform our customers.

These responsibilities have allowed me to channel my creativity, organizational skills, and passion for cannabis into work that feels meaningful. Every day, I’m reminded of how far I’ve come and how much this industry has to offer—not just to me but to everyone it touches.

From Curiosity to Action

If you’re curious about the cannabis industry, my advice is simple: don’t wait. Programs like the one at SLU are more than just academic—they’re a gateway to a growing field with endless opportunities. Whether you’re looking for a fresh start or a deeper understanding, the right education can open doors you never imagined.

For me, what started as a layoff ended with a purpose. And for that, I’ll always be grateful.

A note from SLU CSO Program Director Stacy Godlewski

Jeff graduated at the top of his cohort within the Cannabis Science and Operations program. He excelled in his studies and became a beacon of inspiration for his peers and educators alike. After graduation, Jeff created educational videos for the CSO program that continue to educate students about the importance of compliance and dispensing within the cannabis industry and serve as a valuable curriculum resource for the program.

Jeff has been spotlighted in multiple media interviews for the CSO program, highlighting his experience and journey as a student. These interviews celebrated his achievements and inspired others to join the program and pursue their passion for cannabis to make a difference in the industry. Beyond school, Jeff continues to positively impact the cannabis community by sharing his knowledge about this amazing plant. To date, he is the only program alumnus who has been offered a position to teach within the program.

In 2023, the Cannabis Science and Operations Program was named the Outstanding Program by the University Professional and Continuing Education Association (UPCEA). This award recognizes outstanding professional and continuing education programs that allow students to earn academic credit.

As Missouri has transitioned into a recreational state, the program has continued to grow, and its curriculum has adjusted to maintain relevance in the industry. Instructors are teaching our students and networking with and hiring students out of the program, making this a successful journey for everyone.
