How to Quickly Troubleshoot Your Vape Cartridge and Battery

April 10, 2025  Written by Jeff Rowse

Vaping has become a popular way to enjoy cannabis, but like any device, vape cartridges and batteries can sometimes run into issues. If your vape isn't working as expected, don’t worry! There are some simple troubleshooting steps you can follow to get things back on track. Whether it's a problem with your cartridge or your battery, these easy-to-understand tips will help you fix common issues and get your vape working again. Let’s dive in and keep your vaping experience smooth and enjoyable!

How to Troubleshoot your Vape Cartridge

1. Before you put it on the battery, check the cartridge for leaks.

Before you put the cartridge on the battery, look for any signs of leakage. Oil leaking from the bottom of the cartridge indicates that it’s broken. If you notice a leak, place the cartridge in a plastic bag and return it to the dispensary where you bought it.

2. Is the cartridge screwed on right?

Make sure the cartridge is screwed onto the battery just right. It should be snug but not too tight. If it’s too loose, it won’t work properly. If it’s too tight, it could break the cartridge or prevent the battery from functioning correctly.

3. Clean a clogged cart by inserting a pin into the mouthpiece.

If you’re taking puffs but not getting much vapor, it could be due to a blocked airflow. The tiny holes on the cartridge can sometimes get clogged with oil or debris. You can gently clear these holes using a safety pin or paper clip.

4. Prime the cartridge by taking a few gentle puffs without pushing the button.

Before you start vaping, it helps to prime the cartridge by taking a few gentle puffs without pressing the button. This allows the oil to soak into the coil, ensuring a smoother vaping experience when you press the button to heat the oil.

5. Power on the battery by pressing the button five times.

Most threaded batteries require five quick presses of the button to activate. Other battery styles may need fewer presses. Always check the battery's instructions for specific usage guidelines.

6. Does the oil taste burnt? Turn down the temperature setting by pressing the button three times.

If your vape starts tasting burnt, it might be a sign that the oil is overheating. To fix this, turn down the temperature setting by pressing the button three times. Allow the cartridge to cool before using it again to prevent damage and extend its lifespan.

7. If after everything it still doesn't work, you probably have something defective.

If you’ve tried all the troubleshooting steps and your vape still isn’t working, the cartridge might be faulty. Sometimes cartridges can break or stop working altogether. If the issue persists, the problem could be with the battery. Continue to Pt. 2 - Vape Battery Troubleshooting for further assistance.

8. Enjoy Your Vape with Confidence!

Now that you know how to troubleshoot common cartridge issues, you can enjoy your vaping experience with confidence.

How to Troubleshoot your Vape Battery

1. Before you thread a cartridge, check the battery for leaks.

If your vape battery isn’t working right, check to see if any liquid is leaking from it. If you see liquid, the battery might be damaged, and it could be dangerous. Stop using the battery right away and put it in a sealed plastic bag. Then, take it to a battery recycling place or bring it back to the dispensary where you bought it.

2. Make sure the battery is fully charged.

If your vape battery isn’t working, make sure it’s fully charged. Plug it into the charger and see if the light turns on. If the battery is low or dead, your vape won’t work. Charging it all the way can usually fix the problem.

3. Clean where the battery and cartridge come together.

Oil or dust can build up where the battery and cartridge connect, stopping them from working properly. To fix this, gently clean both connection points with a cotton swab or alcohol wipe. Keeping these areas clean helps the battery and cartridge work together the right way.

4. Is the cartridge screwed on right?

Make sure the cartridge is screwed onto the battery correctly. It should be snug but not overly tight. If it’s too loose, it may not work. If it’s too tight, it could damage the cartridge or the battery connection.

5. Is the button working the way it’s supposed to?

Because batteries are mass-produced, the button can sometimes get stuck or stop working. If the button doesn’t work when you press it, check to see if it’s broken or stuck. If the button is damaged, don’t use the battery anymore. Take it to a recycling place to get rid of it safely.

6. Make sure the battery is turned on.

To turn on the battery, press the button five times quickly. Once the battery is on, check the power level to make sure your oil is heated to the temperature that tastes best. If needed, you can change the temperature by pressing the button three times.

7. Enjoy your vape with confidence!

By following these troubleshooting steps, you can ensure your vape battery is working correctly and enjoy a smooth vaping experience with confidence.

Troubleshooting your vape cartridge and battery doesn’t have to be complicated. With these quick and easy steps, you can resolve most common issues and get back to enjoying your vape. If problems persist, don’t hesitate to visit your local dispensary for further assistance. Happy vaping!
