Are you fighting Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) this winter?

Today we're sharing how you can use cannabis to relieve symptoms of seasonal depression.

It's that time of year: the holidays have passed, and the freezing temperatures have us stuck inside again. If you've been sleeping more than usual, craving carbohydrates, or socially withdrawing into "hibernation" mode, you may be experiencing symptoms of a type of depression known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (aka SAD), according to The National Institute of Mental Health.

How can you use cannabis to feel better?

The current research is showing (though not yet proving) that people who use cannabis to help treat their depression have better success managing their symptoms when they use a 1:1 CBD:THC chemovar or a high-CBD and low-THC product instead of using a high-THC product with no CBD.

Research has shown that CBD works with the 5-HT1 serotonin receptors in our brain by mimicking serotonin and binding to the 5-HT1 receptor, creating anti-depressive effects. In contrast, THC's biphasic dosing response curve can cause paranoia and/or anxiety when THC is taken in high doses — but that doesn't mean you should avoid the THC all together. CBD's effects are actually enhanced when there's a little bit of THC present, so if you're looking for relief from symptoms of depression, try microdosing a high-CBD, low-THC product. Click here to download our instructions for microdosing!

In addition to looking for products with high levels of CBD, you can also seek out chemovars that are rich in the terpenes limonene, linalool, myrcene, beta-caryophyllene, and terpinolene — each of which are known to have anti-depressive properties. Ask your budtender to direct you toward flower options that have these terpenes!
